Hall of Fame Basketball forward Julius ‘Dr. J’ Erving returned to Philadelphia on September 10 to host the 2nd annual Julius Erving Golf Classic weekend to benefit The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia! The Salvation Army has a special place in Dr. J’s heart, as he started playing basketball at a Salvation Army Corps Community Center as a child in New York.
The events kicked-off on September 10 with the Erving Youth Basketball Clinic at The Salvation Army Philadelphia Kroc Community Center. Hundreds of kids practiced their skills with Erving, Philadelphia University’s Women’s Basketball team and 76ers star Jahlil Okafor. Erving’s daughter, Jazmin Erving, Founder and Executive Director of GRAB A BALL & PLAY Foundation, an organization that makes donations of new athletic balls to underserved youth, was also on-hand and made sure every participant left with a new basketball.
The Erving “Black Tie” Ball took place the following day with special guests and musical performances. Celebrities, sponsors and guests were welcomed to a Red Carpet Pairings Party. Event Co-Hosts ESPN SportsCenter Anchor, Jay Harris and Professional Golfer and Fashion Designer, Seema Sadekar introduced celebrity guests and Erving himself.
On the final day of September 12, all golfing guests headed to the ACE Club in Lafayette Hill to tee-it-up in the Official Julius Erving Golf Classic Tournament. Our Children’s Choir performed for the golfers right on the green! Dr. J then presented Major Philip Ferreira, The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia’s Director of Operations, with a framed Erving basketball jersey as a token of his affection for The Army and all that we do!
The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia is immensely grateful for the generosity of Dr. J, his family and his friends, who raised funds to benefit youth at our corps community centers across area.
