PHILADELPHIA (December 11, 2018) The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) continues to provide comfort and care to survivors of a fire that occurred at the Overbrook Gardens apartments in the 900 block of North 63rd Street on December 10, 2018.

The EDS served on-scene for over 19 hours assisting first responders on Monday. Currently, more than 40 individuals are being housed at the West Philadelphia High School that is serving as a temporary shelter for displaced residents. EDS has been assisting evacuees with meals, Emotional and Spiritual Care and other goods since the shelter opened.

“We continue to work with individual needs of those impacted and anticipate continuing to do so over the coming days,” said Bob Myers, Emergency Disaster Services Director, The Salvation Army of Eastern PA & DE.

Financial donations to support The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services are being accepted at www.SalvationArmyPA.org.

The Salvation Army is not accepting donations of clothing and household goods for displaced residents at any of its community centers. Members of the community who would like to donate clothing or household goods, should drop the items at a Salvation Army Family Store location in the Philadelphia area:

  • 4555 Pechin Street, Philadelphia
  • 66 Chester Pike, Collingdale, PA 19023

Displaced residents in need of assistance, must first go through a needs-assessment with the Red Cross, which is stationed at the West Philadelphia High School shelter operation.  Those in need of help with clothing and household goods, will then be connected with The Salvation Army for vouchers that can be redeemed at a Philadelphia-area Salvation Army Family Store.

The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) provides basic needs and services to victims of disaster, while also assisting first-responders. Serving 1-2 million Americans in dozens of response efforts nationwide, EDS is often one of the first on the scene to aid emergency response efforts by providing food, shelter, clothing and spiritual comfort.
