The intersection of Second and Indiana Streets in the Fairhill section of Philadelphia is lined with rowhomes that look tired and worn. Some are completely abandoned. Despite the downtrodden atmosphere, the area was buzzing with activity on this sweltering summer morning. City agencies and numerous community outreach groups, including The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia, set up tables and tents to offer vital social service resources to the residents of this neighborhood, long known as “The Badlands.” Continue reading “On the Front Lines of the Heroin Epidemic in Philadelphia”

EDS Lends Support to City of Philadelphia During NFL Draft

The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) Unit stationed in Philadelphia will support the City of Philadelphia by providing hydration and food to hundreds of first responders and city workers on duty during the three-day National Football League Draft, Thursday April 27 through Saturday April 29. Pendel Mission to Cuba: Part Two

dscn0813The Salvation Army of Eastern PA and DE (Pendel) recently returned from Cuba on a special mission – to renovate the Salvation Army of Cuba’s current headquarters facility into a guest house. The guest house will provide income for the Cuba division and fund the construction of a new divisional headquarters. Additionally the group is engaging Cubans with music and arts ministries, as well as conducting the Sunday Services at the Central Corps.

The Pendel division has given tremendous support financially to this effort, including:  donated linens for the guest house, laptops, instruments, uniform shirts/ties/socks, toiletries and assorted items which were stuffed in the luggage and horn cases!

THE SALVATION ARMY APPOINTS THREE NEW MEMBERS TO PHILADELPHIA ADVISORY BOARD

January 23, 2017-  The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia announced that its advisory board has appointed three new members.

Jeffrey Dunne, Principal, Deals-Valuation Group, PricewaterhouseCoopers; David Hackett, Shareholder, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC; and Brady Hooper, Financial Advisor, UBS Financial Services, Inc. have recently joined The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia’s advisory board. The appointment increased the number of advisory board members from 23 to 26.

“We are committed to the mission and cause of The Salvation Army and the essential role it plays in Philadelphia and throughout the region. Our board is determined to support The Salvation Army with expert advice and counseling from the very best, most talented leaders in Pennsylvania,”  said Aaron Cohen, Advisory Board Chair, The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia. “Jeffrey, David and Brady bring a wealth of career experience and professional leadership to an already outstanding board. “

Raising Awareness and Sharing Hope at The State Capitol

img_7273The Salvation Army is committed to “doing the most good” in the community. That commitment drew Salvation Army officers and staff from Greater Philadelphia, as well as Eastern and Central Pennsylvania, to The State Capitol in Harrisburg on October 25, to share with legislators the work The Salvation Army is doing to better the lives of thousands of Pennsylvanians every day.
