The faith-based volunteer organization World Changers sent 130 high school students to various non-profits in Philadelphia this June, with 30 serving at The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia’s Temple Corps Community Center.
The Salvation Army’s West Philadelphia Corps Community Center is known for its robust 21st Century Learning Zone – an after-school program, which provides young people with a safe, caring and educational environment. Every weekday afternoon the building is buzzing with students’ energy and excitement – from the digital learning program to puppetry class.
The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia is among a number of agencies partnering with the City of Philadelphia to provide hope and transform lives of individuals and families living in Kensington and Fairhill. These neighborhoods are being held hostage by the heroin epidemic. On a blistering hot day in July, a team of Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia volunteers headed out with city workers to the area around Hope Park near East Indiana and Ella Streets. The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) Unit stationed in Philadelphia will support the City of Philadelphia by providing hydration and food to hundreds of first responders and city workers on duty during the three-day National Football League Draft, Thursday April 27 through Saturday April 29. More than 400 community toy drives, as well as individual donations, resulted in the collection of thousands of toys and gifts for children age 12 and under. 6,000 of those donations alone were a result of the CBS 3 Joy of Sharing campaign!
Throughout the month of December, dozens of Salvation Army staff and dedicated volunteers worked to sort and prepare them for families in need. Parents and guardians, pre-approved for Christmas assistance, were able to select gifts for the children in their family.
Despite a deluge of rain to kick off the morning – an army of volunteers descended on The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia on September 19. 500 employees of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) put their regular office jobs to the side, rolled up their sleeves and volunteered their time and talents for a Day of Service. PwC volunteers worked on projects at six Salvation Army building across the city – including painting the iconic Salvation Army red kettles, landscaping and grounds clean-up, building maintenance, warehouse cleaning and sorting of holiday toys, as well as fun and interactive activities with older adults living at Salvation Army senior housing complexes. The grassy fenced-in area on the corner of Broad and Brown Streets is somewhat of a special place for families at the Red Shield Residence. The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia‘s transitional housing program is safe, loving, respectful and compassionate, providing families in crisis with shelter and services as they strive towards self-sufficiency. The yard next to the building is a space where families can let their kids play and enjoy some outdoor time together there as they navigate a difficult time in their lives.
