Senior Health & Resource Fair Attendee Learns about CPR, June 19, 2018

The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia joined with Gateway Health to host a Senior Health and Resource Fair on June 19, 2018, featuring informational booths, health screenings and a mini-workout session, among other offerings. Older adults were able to learn about physical and mental wellness, as well as many local resources that are available to help them stay as healthy and fulfilled.

Roxborough’s Ever Young Club is Good for Your Health

When Tuesday morning comes around, Freda Gowling couldn’t imagine being anywhere else other than The Salvation Army’s Roxborough Corps Community Center. She’s one of dozens of older adults who belong to its Ever Young Club.

“Last week we learned about flower arrangements and we got to take all of the flowers home. They were beautiful. Today we are painting,” Freda explained. “It keeps us active. I like being useful.”

Making a Mark in PA Healthcare History

IMG_8536College students come and go at Moore Hall, unaware of the significance of their nondescript dormitory on the campus of Saint Joseph’s University.  But on a special day in the spring of 2017, dozens of men and women stood before it smiling and hugging, some with tears in their eyes, recalling fond memories they experienced together under its roof decades ago.

“The families we cared for here were incredibly special,” said Vivian Lowenstein, a certified Nurse-Midwife with the Temple University School of Medicine.

Vivian and the others that gathered on this day had worked as midwives, nurses and administrative staff here when Moore Hall was known as the Booth Maternity Center. Founded in 1971, with the support of The Salvation Army, Booth Maternity Center was a dedicated maternity hospital for all women, promoting one standard of care regardless of an individual’s type of insurance or status in life.  The Salvation Army Tabernacle Corps is working to help those poor in both health and resources

The Salvation Army exists to serve and give, but wouldn’t exist without those who give and serve. It’s a never-ending circle of trust that bonds The Salvation Army to its donors, their donations, their communities, their neighbors, who return to The Salvation Army for help or to help. The return on investment into the work of The Salvation Army is both measurable, yet at the same time, unquantifiable. The number of clothes given, meals served, shelters provided, rescues from human trafficking, and Christmas presents given can be counted.
